WESTMINISTER — WESTMINSTER -- A jewelry designer and two developers have leased space at Winchester Exchange, the former Sherwood Square Mall.
UniqueJewelry, owned by Kim E. Wightman of Taylorsville, opened yesterday in a shop along the main corridor of the mall's first floor.
Winter Street Enterprises Inc., a partnership that has built houses in Taneytown and Westminster, opened an office in the mall basement last month, co-owner Robert A. Foster said.
The shopping center,at 15 E. Main St., has been under new ownership since May 31.
Thenew owners -- Robert, David and Jordon Max of Pikesville, Baltimore County -- said they hope to change the image of the building, which has been half-empty since being remodeled in the early 1980s. They hope to attract professional offices and retail shops, Robert Max said.
The jewelry shop is the first business to move into the first floor of the mall since a baseball card shop opened in early 1990. The baseball card shop has since moved to a shopping center on Route 140.
Wightman, a goldsmith, had been working at May-Bell's Gold and Silver Exchange on Main Street. She said she will make custom jewelry anddo repair work in her shop.
Wightman, a 1973 South Carroll High School graduate and former Marine, said she has worked as a goldsmith for 12 years. Some of her work is on display in the shop.
She saidshe also designs stained-glass windows, lamps and other items and does repair work for some jewelry stores in Cranberry Mall.
The shopis open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, and evenings and weekends by appointment, she said.
Winter Street Enterprises has been in business since 1986, Foster said. He and partner Dale V. Christensen have built single-family homes in The Greens in Westminster, and in Fairtown and Daybreak Estates in Taneytown.
The developers build 15 to 20 houses a year in the $99,900 to $105,500 range, said Foster, who lives in Hampstead.
He and Christensen also own W.S. Investments Inc., which operates nine rental properties in Westminster and Hampstead, he said.
The 50,000-square-foot Winchester Exchange has nine other tenants. The owners have hired a commercial Realtor tolease the remaining space.
