June 12, 1991

A 34-year-old man who was shot Monday night in Northwest Baltimore by a man trying to steal his camera died yesterday at Sinai Hospital, Baltimore police said.

Lawrence Edward Coleman of the 2800 block of West Cold Spring Lane died of a single gunshot wound in the chest, police said.

Police spokesman Dennis S. Hill said the incident began about 6:30 Monday evening as Mr. Coleman and a girlfriend stood near a playground in the rear of the 4100 block of Park Heights Avenue.

Mr. Coleman was attempting to sell a camera when he was approached by a man who tried to take the camera from him, Mr. Hill said. When Mr. Coleman refused to hand it over, the other man pulled a gun from his waistband, shot Mr. Coleman and fled, Mr. Hill said. Police said that they were looking for a man about 5 feet 3 inches tall who was last seen wearing a brown flowered shirt, blue jeans and white tennis shoes.
