Mary Sue McCarthy is the executive director of Baltimore...

June 12, 1991

Mary Sue McCarthy is the executive director of Baltimore Operation Sail and president of McCarthy Communications. Part her job as Op Sail director is to help attract tall ships to Baltimore. The Spanish tall ship Juan Sebastian arrived in theInner Harbor this morning, the first of three visiting tall ships that will be visiting us this summer. When she's not working, the Maryland native loves horseback riding, jogging, trying new restaurants and traveling, but not by boat, she gets seasick.

How would you describe your taste in clothing?

Simple and comfortable, somewhat like my personality. I have jobs where I need to look good but also have freedom of movement, so I've found that clothing made of stretch fabric or the wonderful city shorts outfit that I have on in the picture give me the looks and the freedom.

What's the newest thing in your closet?

A pair of Charles Jourdan multi-colored linen shoes that I was forced to buy while shopping with girl friends in West Palm Beach. The shoes, which I got on sale, are black with fuchsia, purple, orange and green. Really neat.

Do you have a true standby that you wear to feel good?

A basic black suit. I always have a black suit that I can accessorize Chanel fashion -- lots and lots of costume jewelry.

What have you held on to for sentimental reasons?

In my early 20s, I had a fuchsia dress that carried me through many fun evenings of dancing in Washington. I have such good memories of the dress that I keep it.

What is your wardrobe weakness?

Shoes -- I don't have as many as Imelda Marcos, but close.

What's the most expensive item in your closet?

An aqua blue designer jacket made of Sea Island cotton. This is another item that I was forced to buy by those same girl friends in West Palm Beach.

What's the least expensive item in your closet?

I have a favorite man in my life who gave me both my favorite and least expensive items. Least expensive are my Reef flip-flops from L.L. Bean and my favorite is a hand-loomed unstructured long jacket that was made by a Montana artist. The fact he gave them to me makes them even more special.

What's the wildest outfit you ever wore?

Spandex leggings with little blinking Christmas lights going up the side of each legging.

What are your favorite accessories?

Gobs and gobs of faux pearls and all kinds of ornate chains in fake gold and pearl combination.

Do you have any shopping tips you'd like to share?

Try a Polo outlet or Ann Taylor on sale. Be persistent with places like Loehmann's. I was once a dress person, but I have discovered jackets and have about four good basic ones that can go with my leggings, skirts or dresses. Jackets can really stretch your wardrobe.
