Lacrosse Stars Honored

WESTMINSTER — Five members of the Western Maryland College men's lacrosse team, along with two Gettysburg College players from Carroll County, have been named to the 1991 Middle Atlantic Conference All-Star Team.

The Western Maryland selections, all on the All-Star second team, are sophomore attackman Tory Kasemeyer, junior midfielders David Heritage and Clark Hospelhorn, senior midfielder Craig Wanner and senior defenseman John Byrne.

Gettysburg senior Erik Johnson, a midfielder from Westminster, was a first-team honoree, and Liberty graduate Steve Mayer, a sophomore, joined Kasemeyer on the second-team attack.

Johnson finished theseason with 16 goals and 6 assists, and Mayer had 29 goals and 19 assists in his first season with Gettysburg.

The Bullets finished the season with a 12-2 record and reached the quarterfinals in the NCAADivision III National Championships.

Hospelhorn also earned threeof Western Maryland's team awards after scoring 29 goals and 14 assists and leading the team in ground balls with 85. The tri-captain waspresented with the Coach Bill Thomas Award, given to the team's mostvaluable player and named in honor of the Green Terror head coach from 1977 to 1981 and 1988 inductee to the Lacrosse Hall of Fame. Hospelhorn also won the Ball Hawk Award for his ground-ball efforts, and shared the Most Valuable Midfielder honor with fellow tri-captain Wanner (28 goals, 22 assists).

Kasemeyer, who topped the squad in scoring with 36 goals and 16 assists for 52 points, garnered the Most Valuable Offensive Player and Rookie of the Year honors. Tri-captain Byrne was the Most Valuable Defensive Player, with Heritage earning the Most Improved Player recognition.

Goalie: Steve Koudelka, Gettysburg. Specialist: Mike Ryan, Franklin & Marshall.

Second team

Attack: Tory Kasemeyer, Western Maryland; Sandy Watkins, Swarthmore; Will Gould, Haverford; Steve Mayer (Liberty), Gettysburg. Midfield: Stefan Zorich, Drew; Clark Hospelhorn and Craig Wanner, Western Maryland. Defense: John Byrne, Western Maryland; Tony DeMarinis, Gettysburg; Justin Weddle, Haverford. Goalie: Arroll Borden, Drew. Specialist: David Heritage, Western Maryland.
