Ice cream plant hires 120 workers in Hagerstown

June 09, 1991

Gold Bond Ice Cream has hired 120 people at its Hagerstown plant to meet demand for its frozen dessert and snack products.

The hirings raise employment at the plant to 380 workers.

About 60 of the new employees will work full time and the rest will be seasonal, said Sue Lembo, a spokeswoman for Thomas J. Lipton Co., the Englewood Cliffs, N.J., company that bought Gold Bond two years ago.

The hirings were good news for Washington County, where the unemployment rate has topped 10 percent in recent months.

More than 1,600 workers have been laid off from six of the county's larger employers during the past 21 months.

"This is the first time in many months a local company has hired that many people," said Leroy Burtner, director of the Hagerstown-Washington County Economic Development Commission.
