Tyson not bidding for Holyfield bout
Mike Tyson will not participate in a purse bid by the International Boxing Federation for a title bout against heavyweight champion Evander Holyfield, Tyson's promoter said yesterday. The former champion's decision, announced by Don King Productions, came one day after a New Jersey Superior Court judge ruled that only the IBF could accept bids from promoters seeking to stage the fight for the unified title.
The IBF, one of three governing bodies for boxing and the lead organization for any challenge to Holyfield, plans its purse bid Tuesday. It has ordered Holyfield to defend his crown by Oct. 25. Holyfield had petitioned the court for relief after the IBF and the World Boxing Council announced plans to hold purse bids, a move the champion said either would cost him money or guarantee a split.
