Academy Award in limelight with winning role at Belmont

ELMONT, N.Y. -- Academy Award put on a star performance in pulling a 12-1 upset in the $150,000 Early Times Manhattan Handicap at Belmont Park yesterday.

The 5-year-old son of Secretariat surged to the front in midstretch of the 1 1/4 -mile turf race, third and final leg of the inaugural Turf Triple. Art Madrid was up.

Early leader Three Coins Up finished second, 1 3/4 lengths behind the winner in a field of 10.

Academy Award, trained by Dick DeStasio, paid $26 to win after finishing in stakes-record time of 1 minute, 59 3/5 seconds. It was his first stakes victory.

Phantom Breeze, the 2-1 favorite, made a mild bid in the upper stretch before fading to eighth.
