Md.-bred Safely Kept wins by 2

ELMONT,N.Y. ` — ELMONT, N.Y. -- Safely Kept became the leading active Maryland-bred earner with an easy victory in the $114,000 Genuine Risk Stakes at Belmont Park yesterday.

Ridden by Craig Perret, the 5-year-old mare immediately burst ahead of her four rivals, then won by two lengths over Missy's Mirage under a hand ride.

From a $165,537 show pool, $157,119 was bet on Safely Kept, causing a $31,770 minus pool.

With a $68,400 winner's share, Safely Kept moves ahead of Little Bold John on the Maryland-bred earnings list. She has earned $1,906,335 and trails only Broad Brush ($2,656,793) on the all-time list.

Safely Kept, by Horatius, was making her first start at Belmont since capturing her greatest victory last fall in the $1 million Breeders' Cup Sprint. She ran six furlongs in 1 minute, 10 seconds over a fast track and paid $2.40 to win.
