San Francisco Giants Draft Glen Burnie Grad

Glen Burnie High School 1988 graduate Jeff Locklear, a first-team All-County infielder his senior year, was selected yesterday by the SanFrancisco Giants in the major-league baseball free-agent draft.

Locklear, a first baseman and left-handed pitcher for the Gophers, will attend a minicamp this weekend in Scottsdale, Ariz., before being assigned to one of the Giants' minor-league teams.

"I'm pretty excited right now," said Locklear, 21. "It's something that I've always wanted. I hadheard some news about it (getting drafted), and I was hoping it would happen."

As a senior at Glen Burnie, Locklear went 6-2 with a 1.79 ERA. At first base, he recorded 72 putouts and seven assists without committing an error.

Locklear also batted .300, with 16 RBI, as the Gophers went 13-6 and won eight of 11 one-run ballgames.

Locklear pitched 59 2/3 innings for Pembroke State University in North Carolina this season, striking out 54 batters and posting a1.96 ERA. He finished the season 5-2 for the Braves, who compete in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Division II.
