Casey upsets Peterka on extra hole

June 06, 1991|By John W. Stewart

Two years ago, Cindy Peterka scored a lopsided decision over Sally Casey for a women's Metropolitan championship, so when the two met in the quarterfinals of this year's event at Hobbit's Glen Golf Club yesterday, Casey was determined to make a better showing.

It wasn't only a better showing, it was a superb effort, as Casey never trailed, finally birdieing the first extra hole to upset Peterka, who was seeking a third straight title.

In other championship pairings, former champion Andrea Kraus was 2-over par in subduing Cheri Cooper, 3 and 2; Joan Lins played even par for seven holes on the back to thwart Sharon Pusin, 3 and 2; and Kanya Chintrisna won the 18th hole to edge Leigh Farrell, 1-up.

Putting was the difference in Casey's victory. She made everything inside 12 feet, including one of that length to end the match after hitting a 145-yard 5-iron shot from the right rough at No. 1, the playoff hole.

Peterka, who had an uncharacteristic five three-putt greens, forced the overtime when she parred the 18th to draw even after Casey had gone ahead at the 17th.

In a match that produced the day's best golf, Cooper, a Hobbit's Glen member who was 6-over, won the 11th and 12th holes to close a gap to one hole.

Kraus won the 13th with a par and the 15th with a birdie (Cooper reached the green of the par-5 in two but three-putted for par), and it was over when they halved the 16th.
