A new compact disc featuring 15 popular local bands is available for $12. The CD, called "Best Bands on the Beach," was scheduled for release last Friday. The bands include Tom Larsen, Tranzfusion, Mystery Machine, Hyde Park, Great Train Robbery, Carbon-14 and The Loft.

To promote the CD, some of the bands will perform at area clubs, including Scandals, 65th Street and the bay, Friday and June 14 and 21. The CD will be available those nights or by calling WZBH-FM at (302) 856-2567. On Friday, Mystery Machine, Hyde Park and Carbon-14 will perform.

Production of the CD was sponsored by WZBH and Mid South Audio Recording Studio in Georgetown, Del., where the bands recorded songs last fall and winter.

For reggae fans, the Reggae Sunsplash World Tour will be held at the Convention Center July 8. The six acts are Maxie Priest, Dennis Brown, Shinehead, Little Lenny, Carlene Davis and Andrew Tosh. For ticket information, call 289-8314.

Other shows on the Convention Center lineup include the rock-and-roll band Nelson, June 12, at 8 p.m., tickets $14.50; Ray Charles, July 3, $17.50; Burt Bacharach and Dionne Warwick, July 17, $25; comedian Jay Leno, July 31, $17.50; country singer Garth Brooks, Aug. 7, $18.50 and $21.50; and Kenny Rogers, Aug. 14, $23.50. Performances are at 8 p.m., except for Mr. Rogers, who will perform twice, at 6 p.m. and 9:30 p.m.

Tickets are on sale at the Convention Center and at ticket outlets including Sound Waves and Ocean Sounds in Ocean City, the Noble Grape in Ocean Pines, Sounds of the Sea in Rehoboth Beach, Del., and the Music Emporium in Fenwick Island, Del.

The upcoming Nelson concert will be a "satisfying, wonderful show," said Denise Cox, the band's publicist said. "They play rock 'n' roll in the grand tradition of the Eagles. It's not a teen pop band. They perform to all age groups.

Nelson, a six-member band featuring Matthew and Gunner, the 23-year-old twin sons of the late rock singer Ricky Nelson.

Bands entertaining this week are: First Class, tonight at the Ocean Club, 49th Street and the beach; King Pins, tomorrow through Sunday, June 9 . . . Cheers, tonight at Horizons, 101st Street and Coastal Highway; Second Coming, tomorrow through Sunday, June 9 . . . Disc jockey Batman, every Friday and Saturday night, at Big Kahunas, 18th Street and Coastal Highway .
