This family-owned business run by Pat and Bill Wernig has moved recently from the Belvedere Square shopping center to a new and larger location on York Road. The Wernigs specialize in grain-fed beef and poultry raised on their farm in Harford County. The store carries a complete deli line as well as very good homemade soups and cakes.
One of Wernig's best items is a whole barbecued chicken roasted on the premises ($2.69 a pound). The tasty sandwich menu features a hardy roast beef sandwich for $2.65, roasted turkey at $3.50, Smithfield ham and turkey at $3.75, Kosher-style corned beef at $2.55 and tuna salad (white meat albacore) or chicken salad at $3.
The Wernigs carry a number of prepared heat-and-eat foods that can be picked up on the way home. These include a rich homemade chili ($2.49 a pound), stuffed cabbages ($1.99 each), macaroni and cheese ($2.49 a pound) and vegetable lasagna ($3.99). Caribbean beef or chicken pies are also popular items ($1.69 each).
Fresh-baked French bread ($1.69) and rolls ($3 a dozen) are also available. The delicious cakes (black bottom, carrot, etc.) are $1.50 a slice.
