Joseph R. Kane is general manager of the Omni Inner Harbor Hotel. He is listed in the 25th edition of Who's Who in Finance and Industry, and was voted the Best Dressed Man of the Year in 1986 during his tenure as general manager of the PittsburghHilton and Towers. He and his wife, Frances, and their three children have called hotels their home.

How would you describe your taste in clothing?

I like quality, conservative clothes. The hotel business operates around the clock, year 'round, so I invest in clothes that not only present well on the job, but travel well. In my position, I frequently travel for industry meetings so I lean toward fully lined, 100 per cent wool for suits that hold their crease and style.

What's the newest thing in your closet?

A golf shirt that is a collage of the American Flag. I wear it in honor of the troops that served in the Persian Gulf, which includes members of my own family and friends of our Omni employees.

What's the oldest thing in your closet?

wedding suit. Frances and I have enjoyed 27 great years together raising our family. So I think of the suit as a great start to a great marriage.

Do you have a true standby that you wear to feel good?

I have a wardrobe of over 30 custom tailored suits and I rotate them regularly to accommodate the season and the occasion. But, when I want that special, "cut above" feeling, I wear my black silk sport coat with gray slacks, a pair of slip on shoes and a white open neck shirt with no tie. It gives me a relaxed feeling.

What have you held on to for sentimental reasons?

Lagerfeld cologne. It's been an annual Father's Day gift from my children for more than 15 years.

What is your wardrobe weakness?

Shirts and shoes are my soft spot. All my shirts are custom made for me by a designer in Pittsburgh. She dates each shirt as a reminder of when to order new ones. My cuffs, custom sized at four inches deep, are monogrammed with my signature, rather than my initials.

I maintain a collection of 30 pairs of shoes to coordinate with my suits as well as casual attire.

What's the most expensive item in your closet?

A bottle of wine. I keep it there for a special occasion.

What's the least expensive item in your closet?

The hangers.

What's the wildest outfit you ever bought?

Definitely my beaver and leather jacket coordinated with my ostrich Western style boots. It's an apres ski outfit that I wear on family outings in Colorado.

What are your favorite accessories?

gold bracelet that I wear all the time. . . it's my trademark. . . and a pair of gold cuff links. I purchased them at a charity fund-raiser for the Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh.
