Seven-part Series Examines The County Schools' Quest To Find And Sign The Top Teachers

Like other school districts across Maryland, Carroll County searchesfor the best teachers to put in its classrooms.

The search involves the efforts of administrators, supervisors, principals and teachers who spend several months visiting colleges and universities throughout the mid-Atlantic region to recruit teachers.

In our seven-part series, "The Search For Excellence," Carroll County Sun reporter Greg Tasker looks at the district's recruiting program, which begins with a visit to the University of Maryland at College Park in early December and winds up at Shepherd College in Shepherdstown, W.Va., in May.In between, recruiters visit schools and job fairs in North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Delaware, New Jersey and Virginia.

About 100 teachers are needed for the next school year tostaff two new elementary schools -- Piney Ridge in Eldersburg and Spring Garden in Hampstead -- as well as to accommodate growth and meetdemands in such areas as special education.

The series, which begins today, includes an overview of Carroll's recruiting program -- the time, cost and people involved. Why do Carroll and other school districts recruit? How competitive is the teaching field?

Another story profiles several recruiters,who are among the 50 the district sends to screen hundreds of candidates at colleges and job fairs. Others look at the district's teaching needs, such as special education teachers and minority role models, and compare Carroll's recruiting program with those of neighboring Frederick, Baltimore and Howard counties, which also travel the circuit.

The series concludes Wednesday with stories looking at two recent college graduates who were recruitedto teach in Carroll schools, what prospective teachers look for in ajob and why they may be considering Carroll County, and what happensnow that the recruiting season has ended.
