May 26, 1991

A 23-year-old Columbia man was in critical condition last night at the Maryland Shock Trauma Center after a pickup truck hit his car at an intersection in Ellicott City yesterday afternoon.

John Santos suffered a severe head injury and multiple internal injuries in the crash, which occurred at 1:10 p.m., a hospital spokesman said.

Mr. Santos was flown to Shock Trauma by a Maryland State Police medevac helicopter.

Mr. Santos, who was not wearing a seat belt, was driving west on Homewood Road, police said.

They said that William Hatfield, 30, of Ellicott City, came to a stop sign on Shepherd Lane, stopped and then continued through the intersection, hitting Mr. Santos' car on the driver's side.

The force drove the car over an embankment, flipping it over.

Neither car had any passengers.

Police have filed no charges but are continuing to investigate the mishap.
