Northeast wins 4th straight title State softball playoffs

May 25, 1991|By Roch Eric Kubatko

It took only four batters for Damascus pitcher Marci Whitehead to allow her first earned run of the season.

By game's end, the junior windmiller also had her first loss, and Northeast had an unprecedented fourth straight Class 2A state championship.

A run-scoring double by Kelly Tibbs in the first inning and Kristy Zulka's four-hitter led the second-seeded Eagles (19-3) past No. 1 Damascus (19-1), 1-0, last night at Upton Park.

The Hornets denied Northeast the title in 1987 with a 2-0 victory, but the Eagles now have won seven championships in the past 10 years.

Class 1A

Third-seeded North Caroline did all its scoring in the third inning to knock off No. 1 Clear Spring, 3-0, in last night's state Class 1A championship.
