Baseball Commissioner's office -- Named Ricky Clemons supervisor for business and international partners, effective June 3.

AL -- Suspended Toronto Blue Jays OF Mark Whiten and Chicago White Sox P Jack McDowell 3 games. McDowell appealed decision through Major League Baseball Players Association, meaning his suspension will not take effect until after hearing before AL president Bobby Brown. Whiten will decide today whether to appeal. After McDowell threw pitch behind Whiten on Sunday, Whiten charged mound and hit McDowell with punch in left eye, precipitating bench-clearing incident.

Atlanta Braves -- Optioned OF Deion Sanders (.197, 2 HRs, 6 RBI) to Class AAA Richmond. Activated P Pete Smith (1-1, 6.41 ERA in 4 rehab starts at Richmond).

Baltimore Orioles -- Fired manager Frank Robinson and reassigned him within organization. Named Johnny Oates manager.

Texas Rangers -- Signed P Eric Nolte and P Drew Hall and assigned them to Class AAA Oklahoma City.


Houston Rockets -- Signed coach Don Chaney to multiyear contract.


Morehead State -- Named Dick Fick, assistant coach at Creighton past 6 seasons, head basketball coach.

Mount St. Mary's -- Named Candy Cage (coach at Northern High School in Calvert County) and Mark Miller (coach at Middletown High School) assistant women's basketball coaches.

Quinnipiac -- Named Tony Horta women's soccer coach.

Trinity -- Announced resignation of Lee Elliott-Henson, women's tennis coach.

UMBC -- Named Rob Ryerson (formerly of Maryland Bays and 1981 Howard County Player of the Year at Oakland Mills) assistant men's soccer coach. Announced resignation of women's tennis coach Laurie Macgill and women's soccer coach Dave Kelley. Keith Puryear, men's tennis coach, will coach women's tennis as well.


Denver Broncos -- Named Riley Odoms coaching intern during training camp. Announced that DE Alphonso Carreker will undergo surgery today to repair herniated disk in back and will need 2 to 3 months to recover.

New England Patriots -- Signed P Bryan Wagner and CB Ronnie Lippett.
