Orioles force Mercedes to take time off

The Baltimore Orioles, citing a lack of hustle on the part of Luis Mercedes, dismissed him from the Rochester Red Wings for a few days so he could sort out his feelings toward the game.

"He just hasn't played and hustled the way we want our playerto play and hustle," Orioles assistant general manager Doug Melvin said. "He wasn't helping the team."

Manager Greg Biagini pulled Mercedes from Game 1 of Friday'doubleheader in Toledo, Ohio. The player left the team Saturday.

Mercedes was not suspended when he left the club.

He and his agent, Michael Powers of Annapolis, were scheduleto meet with the Orioles yesterday.

"There were misunderstandings on both parties, but I don'consider them major," Powers said. "We all needed to meet face-to-face. This is a favorable thing."

* MISCELLANEOUS: Scott Meadows made his Class AAA debuin his hometown of Columbus, Ohio. Meadows, called up to replace David Segui, went 2-for-4 in his first game Sunday. . . . Leo Gomez hit his first home run of 1991 Monday in a 7-4 loss to Columbus.

The Hagerstown Suns have lost Kevin Hickey to the Orioles and outfielders Jack Voigt (.244) and Meadows (.300) to Rochester. The shift of Voigt is expected to be temporary.

Outfielder Dan Berthel (.265, 3 HRs), who is not entirel recovered from a hip injury, has been promoted from Frederick to the Suns roster, which is still two players short.

gereg,7.5,8 * MISCELLANEOUS: Top prospect Arthur Rhodes is still the only Sun on the DL. He has not pitched since May 8 because of shoulder stiffness. . . . Left-handed-hitting OF Paul Carey is 10-for-27 against left-handers with five extra-base hits.

Right-hander Zachary Kerr, the Keys' all-time victory leader -- after winning 14 games in 1990, is back from battling arm problems at extended spring training.

He made his first regular-season relief appearance this week striking out four in two scoreless innings. It was his first work out of the bullpen since he gained the win in the Carolina League championship series clincher last August.

MISCELLANEOUS: P Steve Culkar has joined the Keys from Hagerstown, and C Doug Reynolds has been set to Kane County (Ill.) in the Midwest League. . . . Kip Yaughn (43) and Chuck Ricci (41) are among the Carolina League strikeout leaders.
