Crop Genetics International

Crop Genetics International, a Hanover-based biotechnology company, has reported a 45-cents-a-share loss for its fourth quarter, which ended March 31. Chief Executive Officer Joseph Kelly said the loss was "totally in line" with previous estimates.

Revenue for the quarter rose to $601,800, compared with $143,000 during the same quarter last year, but most of that total reflected income earned on investments of money raised through the company's equity offerings.

Actual product sales were only $600, reflecting the seasonal nature of the only product the company now has on the market, its Kleentek disease-free sugar cane seed. Sales for the full year totaled $1,712,600, down from $2,026,100 in 1990. Mr. Kelly said the decrease was a result of a severe frost in its cane fields in December 1989.

Mr. Kelly said it would be "several years yet" before the company could expect to show a profit.

Environmental Elements

Continuing improvements in demand for this Baltimore-based company's air pollution control equipment have sent profits soaring more than 300 percent.

Environmental Elements Corp., which is in its first year as a public company, said that the recession could slow future earnings growth.

"The recent bookings market has been lumpy," the company's president, F. Bradford Smith, said.

Though the company's backlog has fallen to $73 million, compared to $103 million on March 31 last year, Mr. Smith said that bidding activity is much higher than at this time last year and that the company still has one of the biggest backlogs in the industry.
