QUICKIE APPENDECTOMIES

Anne Arundel Medical Center has shortened patients' recovery after removal of the appendix to a matter of hours instead of days.

The shorter hospital stay is made possible by AAMC physicians' use of the laparoscopic technique, which has already revolutionized gallbladder surgery.

AAMC physicians hope to use the technique for hernia repair and ulcer surgery soon.

At Anne Arundel Medical Center, all general surgeons aretrained to perform the gallbladder surgery called laparoscopic cholecystectomy.

Advantages to using the new technique in an appendectomy include fewer cases of infection from technical aspects of the operation. For those who may have appendicitis, physicians can use the laparoscopic approach for more effective exploration.

For hernia repair, the laparoscopic approach would allow a patient to go back to heavy work in a manual labor job in seven days, rather than 6 weeks.
