Poly, Western capture track titles

Polytechnic and Western High cruised through the regular season to capture their league dual-meet track and field championships, and yesterday in the Maryland Scholastic Association/City-Wide girls track and field championships at Poly, both schools continued to dominate.

Poly won its second straight boys team title, compiling 147 points with Gilman a distant second with 82. Western won the girls title with 168 points, Poly finishing second with 85.

"Everybody expected us to win," said Poly's first-year coach, Bill Hickey. "It was like having a monkey on our backs. We've been running hard competing three times a week leading up to this, hoping to maintain a good level."

Poly's winning relay teams consisted of Mike Owens, Omar Nixon, Tramont Evans and Eric Gay in the 400; Nixon, Gay, Tony Brown and Owens in the 800; Larry Roberts, Marc Johnson, Evans and Ron Drummond in the 3,200; and Mike Williams, Brown, Drummond and Scott Osbourne in the 1,600.

The Engineers got first-place finishes in individual events from // Steven Hamilton (high jump), Evans (110 high hurdles) and Drummond (800).

Western rebounded from a third-place finish a year ago to dominate this year's meet from the start.

"We waited a whole year to comeback and show what we were made of," said Western's second-year coach, Jerry Molyneaux.

Western had two double winners. Michelle Burrell won the 800 and 3,000, and Dana Johnson, the All-America basketball player, won the shot put and the discus.

The Doves' winning relay teams consisted of Janel Bennett, Sheritha Saboor, Tasha Batson and Dionne Smith in the 400; Saboor, Smith, Bennett and Emily Hunter in the 800; Jennifer Eaddy, Margot Brown, Kim Tyler and Burrell in the 3,200; and Batson, Jeanette Gibbs, Smith and Tyler in the 1,600.

Western also got first-place finishes in individual events from Crystal Johnson (high jump) and Gibbs (300 hurdles).

Poly's Anita Manning was the day's lone tri-champion. She won the 100, 200 and 1,500.
