Carryout meals are not a luxury. Some days they are all that stand between my family and starvation. But I'm willing to make some cost-cutting concessions to the recession. Not fewer meals mind you, but more food for the dollar.

Hunan Chef, which offers economical lunch-box specials and even better deals on family dinners, is one restaurant that meets my needs.

Hunan Chef offers Hunan, Sichuan and Cantonese cuisine. Dishes include exotic treats such as the $12.95 Neptune's Catch in Bird's Nest, a combination of scallops, lobster meat and assorted vegetables served in a nest of crispy potato. Chinese restaurant standards, such as sweet and sour pork for $6.95, and shrimp lo mein for $6.75, are also offered.

Family dinners for two people or more are $8.50 per person. In true Chinese menu fashion, patrons can choose selections from two menus, group A and group B. Each person gets an egg roll, fortune cookies and choice of wonton or chicken egg drop soup.

Lunch-box specials, such as chicken chow mein with fried rice, are available Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. They are reasonably priced at $3.85. A fortune cookie is included.
