May 17, 1991

Former assistant Hillory Dean has been named head coach of the Anne Arundel Community College women's soccer team.

Dean, 30, replaces Mike Miles, who resigned in February, saying he no longer could devote enough time to the program.

Dean served as Miles' assistant for six seasons. "I'm very excited. I'm ready to rock 'n' roll. I had some things I was slowly gettingready, and now I can jump into it," he said.

"The only adjustmentshould be more paperwork. Before, I handled the on-field activities. Now, there'll be a lot more paperwork. But it's not that big a change."

A 1978 graduate of Southern High, where he played soccer for three years, Dean said he never assumed the head coaching job was his, despite his extensive background in the Pioneers' program.

"I dideverything not to assume it," he said. "I didn't want any false hopes. Someone could have come in with more experience."

Under Miles, Anne Arundel went 86-30-12 and qualified for the past three national tournaments. In 1988, the Pioneers were ranked No. 1 among junior colleges in the nation.

Anne Arundel has gone 47-10-3 in Region XX, including 27 straight victories.

Practice begins Aug. 12, with the season-opener Sept. 3 against Navy.
