Northeast Stars Give Verbal Ok To Colleges

Two standout athletes at Northeast High have given colleges verbal commitments to attend on athletic scholarships.

Steve Strauss, a first-team All-County swingman in basketball, will sign this afternoon with Allegany Community College.

Stephanie Lazor, The Anne Arundel County Sun's Girls Basketball Player of the Year, is expected to sign tomorrow with

Shepherd College in West Virginia, where she will play basketball and softball.

The 6-foot-3 Strauss, who averaged 19.2 points and 5.6 rebounds, wasnamed The Anne Arundel County Sun's 3A-2A Player of the Year. He also averaged nearly three assists a game.

Earlier in the season, Strauss tied a school record for most points in a game when he scored 38against Southern.

Lazor came back from a serious knee injury to play nearly every minute of every game during the regular season. The 5-foot-11 forward averaged over 16 points and 14 rebounds while contributing a team-leading 91 assists and making 89 steals.

Lazor alsoplays shortstop for the defending state 2A champion Northeast softball team.
