Hemelgarn-Byrd Racing -- Summoned Gordon Johncock, 2-time Indianapolis 500 winner turned farmer, out of retirement and assigned him third-team car. Johncock, 54, who hasn't driven an Indy car in 2 years, will try to qualify Saturday and Sunday for 1 of the 11 remaining spots in the Indy 500.


Commissioner's office -- Named Jeffrey White chief financial officer.

Kansas City Royals -- Placed P Mike Boddicker (3-3, 3.59 ERA; strained ligament in right elbow) on 15-day DL. Activated P Mark Gubicza from 15-day DL.

New York Yankees -- Activated P Pascual Perez, who last pitched in majors April 25, 1990, from 15-day DL. Sent P Rich Monteleone (0-1, 3.75 ERA) outright to Class AAA Columbus.

Oakland Athletics -- Recalled P Joe Slusarski from Class AAA Tacoma. Optioned OF Doug Jennings (0-for-3) to Tacoma. Signed P Andy Hawkins, who had been released by Yankees.

Pittsburgh Pirates -- Activated P Bob Walk (0-0, 4.22) from 15-day DL. Sent P Mark Huismann (0-0, 7.20) to Class AAA Buffalo.

San Diego Padres -- Signed former Baltimore Orioles P Joe Price to minor-league contract with Class AAA Las Vegas.


Washington Bullets -- Promoted David Lanzi and Rick Moreland to vice president, with Lanzi heading up sales, client services and sponsorship departments and Moreland handling lTC communications, broadcasting, advertising and game operations. Also promoted: Rhonda Ballute to senior director of client services, Matt Williams to director of public relations, Mark Schiponi to director of sponsorships and Maureen Lewis to assistant director of public relations.

Memphis Rockets (WBL) -- Named Perry Winstead president.


Limestone -- Announced resignation of baseball coach Gaylord Perry (who will be inducted into Baseball Hall of Fame this year).

Mercer -- Named Bill Hodges men's basketball coach.

South Carolina -- Fired men's basketball coach George Felton (87-62 at school; 20-13 last season) with 1 year left on contract.

South Florida -- Promoted Dennis Donaldson, men's assistant basketball coach, to associate coach and Tommy Tonelli, men's part-time assistant basketball coach, to full-time assistant. Named Dwayne Olinger men's part-time assistant basketball coach.

Southern Cal -- Signed men's basketball coach George Raveling (57-88 at USC; 19-10 last season) to new contract.

Southwest Missouri State -- Named Bob Sundvold (forced to resign from Missouri last year because of involvement in rules violations that led to Tigers' being placed on NCAA probation) men's assistant basketball coach.

Texas A&I -- Named Bill Carter men's basketball coach.

Vanderbilt -- Confirmed that basketball player Bill McCaffrey, who started 21 games at guard for NCAA-champion Duke last season and scored 16 in the title game, is transferring to the school. McCaffrey chose Vanderbilt over UCLA, Stanford and Colorado. Under NCAA rules, he must sit out 1991-92 season. He will have 2 years of eligibility left.


Cleveland Browns -- Signed LB Mike Johnson to 2-year contract.

Detroit Lions -- Signed P-PK Jerry Kauric.

Los Angeles Rams -- Invited former New England Patriots QB Steve Grogan and former Cleveland Browns QB Mike Pagel to try out.

San Francisco 49ers -- Waived CB Stanley Blair, WR Kelvin Edwards and OT Tim Moxley.


Philadelphia Flyers -- Signed D Jiri Latal to multiyear contract.


NBC Sports -- Announced that Gayle Gardner (one-time Channel 13 sportscaster) has reached new multiyear agreement.
