CANDID CLOSET

May 15, 1991

Sarah Fleischer has been an on-air radio personality at 98 Rock since its inception 14 years ago and has worked every shift, but the morning drive. (These days you can hear her from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.) She has been married to attorney Robert Sellers for 13 years and they have two children, ages 3 and 5.

How would you describe your taste in clothing?

I'm schizophrenic about clothes. What I wear depends on my mood. There are times that I'm Western or a rock and roller or sophisticated or a PTA mom. It's whatever strikes my fancy.

What's the newest thing in your closet?

The dress I wore in the picture. It's a little black, cotton knit Liz Claiborne. I bought it to wear to a dinner last Friday night with a German rock group, The Scorpions, who'll be at Merriweather this summer.

What's the oldest thing in your closet?

I am such a pack rat that it is hard to say. I just recently got rid of high school clothes, but I still have clothes from my college days. If I really love something, I hold on to it and when it comes back in style, I freshen it up by adding buttons or with accessories. I also have a few vintage pieces that I bought from second hand shops.

What have you held on to for sentimental reasons?

A full length, red cotton (with some black in it) Indian type dress with an Empire waist, that my parents bought for me when I was going to Temple University. This is one I've held on to that hasn't come back in style yet. They gave me this at a time in my life when I wore only jeans, rarely dresses. I'll keep it for my daughters.

What is your wardrobe weakness?

I have a shoe fetish. People should not ignore their shoes, because they make an outfit. I have at least 30 pairs of shoes.

What's the most expensive item in your closet?

My Tahari dress. It's an elegant black dress. It looks like a coat dress, with big padded shoulders, skirt just above the knees, and the jacket has a double breasted effect. I love it.

What's the least expensive item in your closet?

Hair do-dads.

What's the wildest outfit you ever bought?

I splurged and bought a short, strapless cocktail dress. It's black satin with sequins, back bows and flounces. The last time I wore it, my girls loved it because they though I looked like a Barbie Doll.

What are your favorite accessories?

I love big, funky jewelry in silver, gold or pewter. It doesn't have to be expensive, just me. I've found some small shops that sell handmade jewelry. I love rings, pins, earrings and necklaces.

Do you have any shopping tips you'd like to share?

Buy good quality clothes because they last longer. I'd rather have one nice outfit than ten cheapos. Don't buy something just because it's on sale, if you don't love it, leave it.
