Freshman Lombard Leads Annapolis To The Regional/state Gymnastics Title

May 14, 1991

Behind freshman Pete Lombard's all-around championship performance, the Annapolis boys gymnastics team captured the title at the regional/state meet yesterday at Mount Hebron.

Lombard, whose family is moving to Florida after this school year, won four of six events to winthe all-around title.

He placed first in the vault, horse, parallel bars and high bar. He was runner-up to Chesapeake's Melvin Long (second all-around) in the rings and to teammate Dominic Boardley (third all-around) in the floor exercises.

Lombard's 48.55 all-around score was an improvement over his winning 47.7 mark in the county meet, which had been his career high.

"He (Lombard) is one of the most outstanding gymnasts ever to perform in Anne Arundel County," said Chesapeake coach Kerry Bruce. "He's definitely got Olympic potential. Maryland's loss is Florida's gain."

Annapolis finished with 151.5 points to Chesapeake's132.5 and Mount Hebron of Howard County's 114.75.

"Anne Arundel County pretty much swept the meet," said Bruce. "That's what we came up here to do, and we did it. We're proud of gymnastics in this county."
