Cougars Win, Move To Semis

The second-seeded Chesapeake girls lacrosse team advanced to the semifinals of the 4A-3A state playoffs with a 19-14 win over seventh-seeded Liberty of Carroll County Friday evening.

Senior Diane McBee led the host Cougars, winners of 18 straight, with seven goals. SeniorJulie Smith added six goals, and Julie Henne had two.

Keeper Michele Julian made 13 saves.

Chesapeake trailed, 1-0, but scored 10 of the next 11 goals for an insurmountable lead.

TheCougars (13-0) meet the winner of Friday's No. 6 Perry Hall and No. 3 Catonsville game on Tuesday.


Hillary Kuker scored five goals and Holly Roessler added four to give fifth-seeded Severna Park a 17-14 win over fourth-seeded North Carroll in another 4A-3A girls lacrosse state quarterfinal game Friday.

The visiting Falcons scored four unanswered goals midway through the second half to take a 16-11 lead and never looked back.

Tami Riley, back from a knee injury that sidelined her for most of the regular season, added three goals forthe winners. Goalie Sonya Mulhy turned back 12 shots.

Severna Park (12-1), seeking its fifth straight state title, takes on the winnerof Friday's No. 8 Parkville and No. 1 Dulaney game on Tuesday.
