Here's what to look out for if you're traveling in the Baltimore metropolitan area this week, based on information from state and local highway agencies and the Mass Transit Administration. The list of highway projects includes only newly announced work, not ongoing construction, which is extensive on several highways, including I-95, U.S. 50/301 and the Baltimore-Washington Parkway. Highway plans are subject to change because of weather and other factors.

New highway projects

Fayette at Liberty/Hopkins Place: closed until tomorrow, 5 a.m. Detour: south on Hopkins Place, west on Lombard Street, north on Paca Street, west on Fayette Street.

Howard Street at Pratt Street: closed until tomorrow, 5 a.m. Detour: south on Howard Street, east on Conway Street, north on Charles Street to Pratt Street.

Madison Street at Cathedral: closed until Tuesday, 3 p.m.

Detour: west on Madison Street, south on Cathedral Street, west on Franklin Street, north on Paca Street to McCulloh Street.

Light-rail construction

* Northbound Park Avenue at Mulberry Street: Park Avenue reduced to one lane by construction.

* Dolphin Street between Howard Street and Mount Royal Avenue now one-way westbound. Traffic coming from south via Martin Luther King Boulevard destined for northbound Jones Falls Expressway continues east to Chase Street, east on Chase to Cathedral Street, then north at the 1100 block of Cathedral to Mount Royal Avenue and the expressway.

Bus route changes

The MTA has scheduled these changes in bus routes for this week. For more information, call 539-5000; TTY for the hearing-impaired, 539-3497.

Light-rail construction

Fayette Street at Howard Street will be closed for construction of the future Central Light Rail Line until 5 a.m. tomorrow. The bus lines will travel the regular route westbound on Fayette to Liberty Street, south on Liberty, south on Hopkins Place, west on Lombard Street, north on Eutaw Street, via regular route.

Nos. 1 (southbound), 2 (eastbound), 5 (southbound), 8 University of Maryland Transit Center (northbound), 11 (northbound), 20 (eastbound), 35 (eastbound), 36 (northbound), 91 (southbound) -- Baltimore Street at Howard Street will be closed for light rail construction from 7 p.m. Friday until 5 a.m. Monday. Southbound No. 1 line service will travel via regular route eastbound on Baltimore Street to Eutaw Street, south on Eutaw, east on Pratt Street, south on Light Street, then via regular route. All other lines will travel via regular route to Baltimore and Eutaw, south on Eutaw, east on Pratt, north on Charles Street to Baltimore, then via regular route.

Temporary diversions

Effective tomorrow, Eutaw Street, between Lombard and Pratt streets, will be closed by construction.

Nos. 10, 19, 27 -- Buses will travel the regular route to Eutaw and Baltimore streets, east on Baltimore, south on Hopkins Place, east on Pratt, then via regular route.

No. 160 -- The line will use the route explained above to Baltimore and Hopkins Place, south on Hopkins Place, south on Sharp Street, west on Conway Street, south on I-395, then via regular route.

Hampton Neighborhood Festival

No. 27 -- On Saturday between 9:30 a.m. and 6 p.m., traffic in Hampton will be rerouted for a festival. Northbound via regular route to Chestnut Avenue and 36th Street, north on Chestnut, west on 37th Street, north on Falls Road, then via regular route. Southbound, via regular route to Falls Road and 37th, east on 37th, south on Chestnut to 36th, then via regular route. For Roland and University service, northbound via regular route to Chestnut and 36th, north on Chestnut, west on 37th, north on Roland Avenue, then via regular route. Southbound, via regular route to Roland and 37th, east on 37th, south on Chestnut, east on 33rd, then via regular route. If it rains, the fair will be held next Sunday from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Highlandtown Merchants Festival

Because of a festival in Highlandtown, the following reroutings will be followed from midnight Saturday until 8 p.m. Sunday.

No. 10 -- Southbound via regular route to eastbound on Eastern Avenue at East Avenue, south on East, east on Fleet Street, north on Haven Street, east on Eastern, then via regular route. Northbound via regular route to westbound on Eastern at Haven, south on Haven, west on Fleet, north on East, west on Eastern, then via regular route.

No. 23 -- Eastbound via regular route to southbound on Grundy at Gough Street, east on Gough, south on Haven, east on Eastern, then via regular route.

Preakness Day reroutings

Pimlico Road between Northern Parkway and Cross Country Boulevard will be made one-way northbound Saturday from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. for the Preakness.
