County Drivers Sprint Back Into Race-winning Form

After a week of off performances and two weeks of rainy weather, county drag racers got back on track last weekend.

One Carroll driverwon his class at 75-80 Dragway in Monrovia, Frederick County, Sundaywhile several others had strong showings.

Joe Cook of Westminster won in Class II in his Thunderbird, whileRoger Jorss of Sykesville advanced to the semifinals and Tim McGee of Sykesville reached quarterfinals.

In Class I, five of the eight quarterfinalists were from Carroll -- Russell Barefoot and J. R. Gonyea of Mount Airy, David Nail of Sykesville, Allan Palmer of Hampsteadand Buddy Wilson of Westminster.

Hampstead's Ron Roberts was a runner-up in motorcycle racing.

Meanwhile, at Mason-Dixon Dragway inWashington County, Barefoot and fellow Mount Airy resident Larry Maynde advanced to the third round in the Super Pro competition, while Gonyea and Woody Etzler (also from Mount Airy) advanced to the second round Saturday.

Finally, on the drag strips, Tim Peters and Lee Howe of Westminster each won two rounds in their dragsters Sunday during the Super Comp Race at Englishtown Dragway in New Jersey.

In other weekend motor sports:

* Rick Jones won the semi-late-model feature Friday night at Trail-Way Speedway in Hanover, Pa., after winninga heat.

Garry Herman of Hampstead finished second in the eight-cylinder stock feature, followed by Gregg Messersmith of Manchester (fourth), Gregory Richardson of Sykesville (eighth) and Mark Shorb of Westminster (ninth).

* Charlie Shaffer of Hampstead had the second-fastest, and Gary Stuhler the fifth, one-lap time ever Sunday at Hagerstown Speedway in Washington County.

Shaffer clocked in at 22.536 seconds and Stuhler at 22.683 during the Shorty Bower's/Bull Durham Memorial. Stuhler wound up third in the 35-lap feature and Shaffer sixth.

Mike Harrison of Mount Airy battled for the lead early in the 20-lap limited late-model feature, finishing fifth.

* Shaffer alsohad a strong performance in the 35-lap late-model race Saturday night at Winchester Speedway in Virginia. Shaffer started in the 15th postion but worked his way up to fourth.

* Cris Eash, formerly of Woodbine, had a strong weekend showing on the track but still wound up fifth in the WSBA Busch Cup Racing Series sprint car standings.

Eash took the lead Friday night on lap 19 of the 25-lap feature at Williams Grove Speedway in Pennsylvania and earned $2,500 while moving up to third in the point standings.

On Saturday, he placed fifth in the 25-lap sprint feature at Lincoln Speedway in Hanover, then took 10th in the 25-lap feature at Susquehanna Speedway in Newberrytown, Pa., Sunday, -- to end up fifth in the point standings.

Two other area sprint car drivers performed well at Lincoln.

Jeff Shepard of Upperco had the lead early in the race but lost it on lap 11. He finished second.

Jesse Wentz of Manchester finished ninth in that race, while Randy Zachman of Westminster was fourth in the late-model feature at Lincoln.
