No. 2 seed Terps women get bye

May 07, 1991

The University of Maryland (13-2) was seeded second and received a bye into the Final Four of the ninth annual National Collegiate Athletic Association women's lacrosse tournament, as the draws for Division I and Division III were announced yesterday. This will be the school's seventh tournament appearance.

The University of Virginia (14-1) was seeded No. 1.

This marks the second straight season the Terrapins have been given a pass into the semifinals. Last year, they defeated Loyola in the round of four, then lost to Harvard in the championship game.

Although Maryland has a veteran team, the Final Four will be a new experience for first-year coach Cindy Timchal. At Northwestern, where she coached for nine years, she took five lacrosse teams to the NCAAs, but none reached the semifinals.

"Actually, I'd like to have a game Saturday, but we are excited about being in the Final Four," Timchal said after practice yesterday. "Part of our preparation will be dealing with the wait, but basically we are interested in keeping the players fresh and channeling their enthusiasm."
