EWING, N.J. -- Forward Brian Haynes scored both goals, as the Maryland Bays defeated the Penn-Jersey Spirit, 2-1, in their American Professional Soccer League opener at Trenton State College last night.

Haynes scored the winning goal at the 32-minute mark, sending a 20-yard direct free kick through the Penn-Jersey defense and past goalkeeper Chris Vaccaro. Haynes' first goal came at the 12:06 mark after he received a pass from midfielder John Abe and beat Vaccaro.

Penn-Jersey tied the game at 25:00 on Pat O'Kelly's penalty kick, after Omid Namazi was called for a hand-ball in his penalty area.

Jean Harbor missed two chances late in the second half to put the game away for the Bays, missing two shots on breakaways.

The victory runs the Bays' opening-day record to 4-0. Maryland will meet the Fort Lauderdale Strikers in a rematch of last year's American Soccer League championship series in the Bays' home opener Saturday at Cedar Lane Park in Columbia.
