Pvt. Alan P. Arkwright, son of Alan W. and Linda Davis of Mount Airy, has completed basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo.

During the training, he received instruction in map reading, tactics, militarycourtesy and U.S. Army traditions.

COOK HOME FROM MIDEAST

Navy Lt. j.g. Christopher M. Cook, son of Ramon and Doris Cook ofLaurel, recently returned from deployment to the Middle East in support of Operation Desert Storm while serving aboard the destroyer USS Spruance, homeported in Mayport, Fla.

Cook, a 1988 graduate of theU.S. Naval Academy, joined the Navy in May 1988.

GLENELG GRAD RETURNS

Marine Lance Cpl. Dmitri Wasilewski, a 1988 graduate of Glenelg High School, returned from a seven-month deployment to the Mediterranean and west coast of Africa while serving with the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit, stationed at Camp Lejeune and New River, N.C.

The 2,500 Marines and sailors of the 26th MEU participated in exercises inSpain, Turkey, Gibraltar and in Operation Sharp Edge in Liberia.

Operation Sharp Edge supported the U.S. Embassy in Liberia, evacuating U.S. citizens and other nationalities several times a week. They also provided humanitarian assistance by airlifting food, water, fuel and medical supplies.

PRESTON ENDS TRAINING

Navy Seaman Hayes B. Preston, son of Mary Preston of West Friendship, has completed recruit training at Orlando, Fla.

A 1989 graduate of Glenelg Country High School, he joined the Navy in November 1990.

FABRICIUS IS RECRUIT

Navy Seaman Recruit Michael S. Fabricius, son of Patricia Hill of Ellicott City, has completed recruit training at Great Lakes, Ill.

A 1987 graduate of Howard High School, he joined the Navy in December 1990.

SGT. RETURNS FROM TOUR

Marine Sgt. William J. Craig, son of William and Irene Craig of Sykesville, recently returned from a seven-month deployment to the Mediterranean and west coast of Africa while serving with the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit, based in Camp Lejeune and New River, N.C.

The Marines and sailors of the 26th MEU participated in exercises in Spain, Turkey, Gibraltar and also participated in Operation Sharp Edge in Liberia.

BOX COMPLETES TRAINING

Navy Seaman Recruit Robert E. Box, sonof Carl and Judy Box of Mt. Airy, has completed recruit training at Great Lakes, Ill.

During Box's eight-week training cycle, he studied general military subjects designed to prepare him for further academic and on-the-job training in one of the Navy's 85 basic fields.

ASH IS NAVY FIREMAN

Navy Fireman Recruit Benjamin M. Ash, son of James Ash of Columbia, has completed recruit training at San Diego.

A1989 graduate of Mt. Hebron High School, he joined the Navy in November 1990.

MIDSHIPMAN EARNS STARS

Navy Midshipman Andrew N. Smith, son of Carl and Claire Smith of Ellicott City, received the academic star while attending Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps Unit, Villanova University, Pa.

The academic star is awarded to the student who achieves a grade average of 3.0 to 3.5 during a semester.

The award consists of two gold stars worn on the lapels of the midshipman's naval uniform.

Smith is a 1988 graduate of Mt. Hebron High School.
