Union Bridge is home to the Western Maryland Railway Historical Society Inc. Museum on North Main Street.
The museum is in a 1902 Victorian structure adjacent to the old Western Maryland train station that once served as the railway's general offices.
The building is undergoing an extensive renovation effort, including the installation of new heating and air conditioning facilities to protect the society's extensive collection of photographs, maps andcharts and other documents, some dating from the last century.
A beautiful model railroad also is on display, which operates on the last Sunday of each month from May through October.
The museum is open to the public every Sunday, May through October from 1 to 4 p.m., and other times by appointment.

Carroll's only freightand passenger train services also are housed in the old WM train station building, but are separate from the museum.
Maryland Midland Railway Inc. is a privately owned freight hauler with two lines: one west to Highfield, Pa., and another east to Glyndon, Baltimore County.
The county's passenger service is operated by The EnterTRAINmentLine, and then only for weekend and special excursions.
Comfortable passenger cars, one with a dome top and one an open coach, allow riders to view the scenery in Carroll and Frederick counties.
Selected 3 1/2-hour trips at special rates are available for groups who wish to reserve the train.
Riders can choose coach, executive club or luxury class fares, ranging from $18 to $60 for adults, and $11 and up for children.
Senior citizen discounts of 10 percent and group rates are available.
The trains are available for rental for special group activities as well.
Annual excursions include the Westminster Fallfest trip in September and the Thurmont Catoctin Colorfestin mid-October.
A Romance on the Rails trip for adults only is available every Saturday from Westminster to Thurmont.
The train leaves Westminster at 5:30 p.m. and returns at 9 p.m.
The first-class fare of $39 includes food and beverages.
