THE INTERNATIONAL EMPORIUM DELI

The "International" in International Emporium peeks through in erratic ways among the usual deli fare, the daily specials -- liver and onions on a recent afternoon -- and shelves of convenience )) foods. "Sopa de Espana," or Spanish soup, is a menu regular, as are spicy Caribbean pies and bean pie for dessert.
But the deli's touted "international sandwiches" are such in name only. There is the Kremlin, ($3.95), a mountain of roast beef, ham, Swiss cheese, tomato and pickle on dark rye. And there is the Jewel of the Nile ($3.95), a healthy tower of alfalfa sprouts, cucumber, Muenster or Swiss cheese, lettuce, tomato on thickly sliced six-grain bread.
International or not, these sandwiches are well endowed and extremely fresh. And the atmosphere is buoyant at the International Emporium, on the site of a newly restored building that houses Johns Hopkins University graduate students and their families from around the world.
The guys behind the counter are friendly and helpful, and a small boom box, surrounded by tapes, contributes to a homey atmosphere.
Besides sandwiches, the International Emporium offers a selection of hot meals including beef and vegetable lasagna (both $4), buffalo wings (6 pieces for $3) and "real homemade chili" ($1.75 for a small order; $2.50 for a large).
