BSO's sounds of summer

May 03, 1991|By Ernest Imhoff | Ernest Imhoff,Evening Sun Staff

THE BALTIMORE Symphony Orchestra will play eight outdoor concerts of mixed classical music at Oregon Ridge from June 23 to August 3 and six Summerfest concerts of Beethoven and Barber music at Meyerhoff Symphony Hall July 11-27, leading off with Beethoven's majestic Symphony No. 9.

In one change this year, dancing to live bands outside the Meyerhoff will follow every Summerfest concert rather than just the Vienna night. And outside food and drink will be sold after, rather than before, the concerts when it is cooler.

Tickets are $10 for adults and $4 for children at Oregon Ridge and $12 for all Meyerhoff seats except $20 box seats.

Oregon Ridge artists include BSO principal flutist Emily Controulis, violinist Ramsey Husser, pianists Seung-Un Ha and David Buechner and conductors Chosei Komatsu, Robert Spano, Heiichiro Ohyama, David Loebel and Richard Hayman.

Summerfest artists playing at the Meyerhoff under music director David Zinman are violinist Joshua Bell and these pianists: Soviet emigre Vladimir Feltsman, the Brazilian Nelson Freire, Jeffrey Kahane and the father/daughter team of Claude and Pamela Frank playing separate pieces.

The 8 p.m. Oregon Ridge schedule highlights include the following:

June 23: Conductor Komatsu, Controulis playing Briccialdi's Carnival of Venice, Dvorak's Symphony No. 9 (New World).
