LOUISVILLE -- Long shot Subordinated Debt was withdrawn from the prospective Kentucky Derby lineup yesterday, reducing the likely field to 16 or 17 runners.

Trainer David Monaci was unavailable for comment, and has not been at Churchill Downs, but the horse's groom Billy Foxx said the Halo colt is out of the race, a development that Churchill Downs officials later confirmed.

"From what I understand, he is not going to run," Foxx said. "He's as sound as a clock, they just elected not to run. I just found out for sure this [yesterday] morning."

Subordinated Debt is expected to return to Belmont Park.

Trainer Ron McAnally has the two-horse entry of Sea Cadet and Olympio listed as possible starters. But McAnally still is expected to run the speedy Sea Cadet and reserve Arkansas Derby winner Olympio for the Preakness.

Two last-minute long shots, Forty Something and Paulrus, also are still listed as prospective starters.

Fly So Free has been installed by track oddsmaker Mike Battaglia as the 2-1 favorite. But Strike The Gold and Hansel were so impressive in their last Derby preps that they might actually be favored over the Scotty Schulhofer-trained colt.

California gelding Best Pal also will have substantial support. He has been working superbly at Churchill Downs this week and seems to be physically peaking at the right moment.

JTC Hansel tuned up for the Derby by working five eighths of a mile yesterday in 1 minute, 4/5 seconds. "We didn't want to burn up the track," his trainer Frank Brothers said. "He just ran 13 days ago."

Strike The Gold and Fly So Free were scheduled to have their final important drills today.
