Hansel's workout impresses Bailey Kentucky Derby notes

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Hansel had his final work before Saturday's Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs yesterday morning. The colt went 5 furlongs in 1 minute, 4/5 seconds, which pleased trainer Frank Brothers.

Jerry Bailey, who will ride Hansel in the Derby, was aboard for the work.

"He was on his toes," said Bailey.

Of the Derby's Big Four, Hansel is the only starter to win his last two starts. Strike the Gold won his last race, and Fly So Free and Best Pal lost their last outings.

Many insiders make Hansel the horse to beat, and Bailey is aware of the colt's momentum.

"He's by far my best Derby horse," said Bailey, a 33-year-old veteran who had his best year in 1990, when he was the sixth-leading earner among jockeys.

Bailey, winless in three Derby tries, said, "This is my best chance yet."

* A tradition of Derby week is a training ploy known as schooling ithe paddock. Horses are led to the paddock between the afternoon races and familiarized with the surroundings they will see Derby day.

Fly So Free, who will be the morning-line favorite, was schooled ++ Monday and might go back tomorrow.

"He was cool, calm and collected in there, and that's why we may go back," said trainer Scotty Schulhofer.

Fly So Free's last serious Derby prep move, 4 furlongs, ischeduled for this morning.

* Corporate Report, having recovered from a bruised foot, ischeduled to gallop for the next three days before running Saturday. If the colt runs, it will extend trainer D. Wayne Lukas' streak of having at least one Derby starter to 11 years.

* Subordinated Debt, regarded as a rank outsider, is out of thDerby. His defection leaves Best Pal as the only gelding in the field, which figures to be 16 when entries are drawn tomorrow.

Churchill officials listed Forty Something and Paulrus as Derby probables yesterday.

Forty Something, Paulrus and Alydavid are still without rider assignments. Trainer Phil Hauswald said he probably will get Corey Black or Mike Smith to ride Alydavid, winner of the Derby Trial. Reggie Vardon also wants Black but apparently has not obtained a firm commitment.
