County Is 'Tree City'

Howard County was designated as a Tree City USA by the National Arbor Day Foundation and the Maryland Forest, Park and Wildlife Service in an awards ceremony Friday.

County Executive Charles I. Ecker waspresented with the award and an American flag. The ceremony concluded with the planting of a maple tree presented by the Wildlife Serviceand the Howard County Forestry Board.

The county, one of only two in Maryland that achieved the award, met the criteria of maintaining a comprehensive urban tree-care program, having a designated tree-governing body, a tree ordinance and a program of Arbor Day observances.
