Triantos wins Reservoir ultramarathon

Those who have hiked or fished the trails of Gunpowder Falls and Prettyboy Reservoir know how long the day sometimes can grow. Vassili Triantos of Olney, the winner of Sunday's inaugural Reservoir 50-mile ultramarathon, knows the feeling well.

Triantos finished the race across a series of Department of Natural Resources trails through Gunpowder State Park and Prettyboy Reservoir in 8 hours, 10 minutes, 6 seconds.

"It felt more like 60 [miles]," Triantos, 36, said. "The last 5 miles, they were forever. We cut here; we cut there. It was twisting, bending, up and down, this way and that."

Triantos, who began running ultramarathons 20 years ago but gave up the longer distances in the mid-1970s, took up ultramarathoning again two years ago.

"I haven't finished my last three or four," said Triantos, who nTC completed the Athens Marathon in 1985. "I came here just to finish."

Finish he did, but not before a grueling challenge in the last 10 miles.

"That was the worst," Triantos said to Barry Capelli, who anchored the winning relay team that included Chuck Bollinger and Keith Brophy. "Some sections you were running hard, but you were only doing an 8- to 10-minute pace.
