CURRENT volunteer news and needs:

Patuxent River Discovery Day. On May 4th, volunteers in seveMaryland counties bordering the Patuxent river will help stage 63 celebrations in 30 different parks and nature centers. Get a brochure of the events in Room 1101, 301 West Preston St., Baltimore, 21201 or call 225-4500 (or call 627-2270 in Upper Marlboro). On May 5th, help in tree planting, stream bank stabilization and trash clean-up on the Patuxent. Call (301) 627-6074.

Volunteers Move Maryland is a display trailer staffed by the Governor's Office on Volunteerism and designed to encourage people to volunteer in their community. It will be on display at Sandy Point Park during the Bay Bridge Walk, May 5. The trailer will be taken to events in Maryland through Chesapeake Bay Appreciation Day at Sandy Point Park on October 26. Hospice Services of Howard County volunteers are sponsoring the first Decorators' Show House located in the Courtyard Homes in Hobbit's Glen, Columbia, through May 5. Artists, crafts, a tea room and more. Hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. $7 admission. Call 461-5530.

Save Our Streams. A reminder for those who can help. Hundreds of volunteers are needed for a major stream survey of the Severn River and its tributaries from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on May 11. Howard County General Hospital wants students between the ages of 15 and 18 for its Summer Junior Volunteer program (giving a minimum of 12 hours per week). The program runs June 19 through August 30. Deadline to apply is May 31. Call 740-7980.

Carroll County Farm Museum wants volunteer teachers in the new Hands-On exhibit room. Help may include writing with a quill pen, using an apple peeler, grinding corn and other activities. Help is wanted Tuesdays through Fridays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Days and hours are flexible. Call 848-7775 or 876-2667.

Child Study Association of Maryland, Inc. wants volunteers to help at its 5th Anniversary Family Fair and Craft Show to be held 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 2 at Oregon Ridge Park in Cockeysville. Call Andrea Burgoyne, 667-9633.

Children's Hospital and Center for Reconstructive Surgery and NTC the Bennett Institute have several volunteer needs, including assisting and transporting adult patients in wheelchairs, host and hostess in hospitality room, sales in gift shop, clerical assistance. Augsburg Lutheran Home wants volunteers for its new program of regular structured visits with residents. Call 486-4573.

Jewish Vocational Service wants tutors to teach Russian immigrants conversational English. Knowledge of Russian not required. Call 466-3300.

Baltimore City Foster Care Review Board wants volunteers to review the cases of children who have been in foster care for six months or more. There are 27 vacancies and a great need for concerned adults. Call 554-5797.

The Maryland Lawyers for the Arts, Inc. want volunteers to handle grant applications, administrative and office work. Also the MLA needs donations of computers and other equipment. Details: Diane Davison, 752-1633.
