Brooks a millionaire after playoff win

April 29, 1991

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Mark Brooks had 10 birdies and two bogeys to charge to the front of the pack at the Greater Greensboro Open yesterday, but he needed a nearly routine par before he could enjoy his work.

Brooks beat Gene Sauers on the third hole of sudden death to take the $225,000 first-place money. Winning also made Brooks the PGA's newest millionaire at $1,139,301 in a career which started in 1984.

The two ended the tournament at 13-under 275, with Brooks turning in an 8-under 64 at Forest Oaks Country Club. The score merely earned him the chance to play more holes to settle the title.

After both parred the first two playoff holes, they returned to the par 3, 17th hole. Brooks hit his tee shot in the left bunker, and Sauers found the right sand trap for the second time on the 200-yard hole.
