Driver Dies Jumping From Runaway Truck

Police, fire log

April 28, 1991

A dump truck driver was killed Friday after being run over by the rear wheels of the truck, which went out of control on Route 32 in Clarksville, county police said.

Police were withholding the name of the victim, a 23-year-old Prince George's County man, until relatives were contacted.

The accident occurred about 9:15 a.m. when the man lost control of the truck in the 6500 block of Route 32, apparently when the truck's brakes failed, county police said.

Police said the westbound truck crossed into the opposite lane and began heading toward the lawn of a home. After unsuccessfully trying to pilot the runaway truck backinto his own lane, the driver jumped from the vehicle, police said.

The rear wheels ran over him. The truck continued back on to Route32 and struck an eastbound truck, police said.

The driver of the dump truck was taken by helicopter to the University Hospital Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

County police have performed an inspection of the truck and are continuing the investigation.

The driver of the second truck, Earl Ingram, 51, of Woodbine, was treated and released at Howard County General Hospital.
