Supported Employment

Carroll Haven

On behalf of Carroll Haven and Juanita Haines, I would like to thank you for the wonderful article featured in the April 7 issue of The Carroll County Sun.

This feature positively portrayed not only Juanita's successes, but alsothose of Carroll Haven's Supported Employment service.

One of ourgoals at Carroll Haven is to promote positive community awareness and refute negative stereotypes concerning the abilities of persons with disabilities.

The article and photographs will assist us in achieving this goal. Readers were given a fresh, positive image of persons with disabilities and their ability to make worthwhile contributions to the community.

With increasing public interest in the abilities and rights of these individuals, I am hopeful that there will be other articles equally as positive. Thanks again for your interest.

In theApril 14 issue, page 8, "How Carroll's six legislators voted on key issues during 1991," this citizen was appalled to learn that three ofour delegates, Richard N. Dixon, D-Carroll, Donald B. Elliott, R-Carroll, Howard, and Richard C. Matthews, R-Carroll as well as the Senate Judicial Proceedings Committee voted against HB 310, which would ban the sale of semiautomatic assault weapons.

Evidently, these elected officials do not value the lives of our police officers or the lives of innocent citizens caught in the cross-fire of these weapons.

It would be interesting to know how many of these officials are members of the National Rifle Association or have been intimidated by the lobbyists of that organization. It may be difficult to stand up against their millions, but we need elected officials with integrity andbackbone enough to stand up against the advocates of assault weapons.

From numerous reports, we are fast becoming a violent society inwhat we delight in calling a free country (free to kill each other).

I am in favor of banning the sale of semiautomatic assault weapons.
