Friends share first place in local pro-am

April 23, 1991|By John W. Stewart

Fran Rhoads took a golf lesson from John McNaney recently -- the two Frederick County professionals have played several rounds together in past weeks -- and yesterday the two found out it meant mixed blessings in a Middle Atlantic Professionals Golfers' Association pro-am at Rolling Road Golf Club.

The two, taking advantage of their local knowledge of the tight and demanding Catonsville course, shared first place with rounds of 3-under par 67 to lead 61 pros in the club's traditional event.

McNaney is a former Rolling Road assistant now teaching at the Country Road Golf Center. He shot 32-35 in the afternoon to tie Rhoads, who grew up in Catonsville, is an assistant at Holly Hills CC, and had posted 33-34 earlier in the cold, windy day.

"He gave me a couple of swing keys, some things to think about," Rhoads, 31, said of McNaney's lesson. "We've known each other about 15 years. He's a great teacher, and is always willing to help."

Rhoads had shot 69 in this event twice before, as an amateur and as a pro, but cited a 30-43 round of a year ago for his motivation. "There was a revenge factor. I was a little pumped this time."

Paul O'Leary, the Greystone course superintendent, had 36-34 for a par-matching 70 and low gross among the amateurs. A 7 handicapper, he also helped a foursome led by Eagle's Nest pro Mike Welsh to the team net prize, 125.

NOTES: Bob Bilbo, head pro at Argyle CC, had nine birdies in his last 14 holes, but also had six bogeys and a double in the round for a 1-under 69. . . . McNaney and Rhoads each had six birdies, three bogeys. . . . Columbia CC assistant Jack Skilling, who shot 65 at Wicomico Shores last week, missed a 10-foot putt on his final green and settled for 68. . . . The course was in excellent shape, especially considering the weekend of rain, and the greens were hard and slick.
