The following area servicemen recently completed basic military training:
* Marine Seaman Recruit Melanio A. Rivera, son of Raymond A.And Bernadita A. Rivera of Odenton, completed training at Recruit Training Center, Great Lakes, Ill.
He is a 1990 graduate of Arundel High School.
* Air National Guard Airman Kevin M. Long, son of Joseph M. Long of Haverhill, Mass. and Mary E. Long of Annapolis, completed training at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas.
* Pvt. Antoin T. Johnson, son of Barbara A. Joyce of Annapolis, completed training at Fort Knox, Ky.
He is a 1990 graduate of Annapolis Senior High School.
* Airman Claudette N. Douglas, daughter of retired Air Force Technical Sergeant Roger and Gertrude Douglas of Millersville, completed training at Lackland Air ForceBase, Texas.
She is a 1988 graduate of Old Mill High School.
The Naval Academy's Annual Holocaust Memorial program was hosted Sunday, April 14, at the academy's Main Chapel. This year's theme was "In Remembering One, We Remember the Many."
Leo Bretholz, featured speaker, told stories from his internment in camps during World War II, and his escapes and arrests and his experiences as a member of the French underground resistance movement.
Just 17when he fled his country after its annexation by the Nazis in 1938, the Vienna, Austria, native swam across the border to Luxembourg.
His story is included in a recently published book, "Holocaust: A History of the Jews During World War II," by Martin Gilbert.
Those attending the service received a memorial candle and memorial cards with the names of individual Holocaust victims on one side and poems about the Holocaust on the other.
The observance concluded with a candle-lighting ceremony remembering all those who died in World War II.
VANCE IS TOP AIRMAN
Airman First Class William W. Vance, a tactical electro-environmental systems specialist at Luke Air Force Base, Ariz., has been named airman of the month for the 58th Aircraft Generation Squadron.
He is the son of William B. and Barbara A. Vance ofSenoia, Ga.
His wife, Christian, is the daughter of Gregory C. and Barbara Nave of Glen Burnie.
MCCRONE IN INFANTRY
Marine Pfc. Jason L. McCrone, son of Pat and stepson of Dan W. Guido of Arnold, has completed infantry school.
During the course conducted at Marine Corps Base, Camp Lejeune, N.C., McCrone received classroom instructionand participated in field exercises involving infantry tactics, the construction and camouflage of fighting positions, the use of mines and other demolitions, and intracompany communications equipment.
He is a 1990 graduate of Broadneck Senior High School.
TRICE IN DESERTSTORM
Marine Pfc. Anne M. Trice, daughter of Paul V. Trice of Glen Burnie, was recently called to active duty in support of Operation Desert Storm while serving with the 4th Marine Aircraft Wing, Naval Air Station Whidbey Island, Oak Harbor, Wash.
MILLER LEARNS LAW
Marine Pfc. Heather L. Miller, daughter of John C. Miller of Annapolis, has completed a course on legal services.
During the course with School Battalion, Marine Corps Base, Camp Pendelton, Ca., Miller was provided with a working knowledge of the various administrative dutiesassociated with assignments in the legal field.
Among her studies, she received instruction on the techniques and equipment used for recording the proceedings of court-martials, board of inquiries, and investigations.
BARBOUR, JOHNSON FINISH
Pvt. Joseph R. Barbour and Pvt. Charles W. Johnson has completed the basic field artillery canoneer course at Fort Sill, Okla.
During the course, students were taught the duties of howitzer or gun section crewman. They also received instruction in communications, maintenance and the handling of ammunition and explosives.
Barbour is the son of Janet I. Lindsey of Claysburg, Pa., and George L. Barbour of Glen Burnie.
Johnson is the son of Patricia A. Johnson of Pasadena.
