While reading "Who's Got the Clout?" [Feb. 17] I was appalled by the arrogance and audacity shown by J. Stevenson Peck. His reference to 35-year-old executives and their lack of community involvement really raised my ire. . . . I would contend that if [these] allegations are true, the older generation of executives (excuse me for generalizing) are to blame. This group has laden the city's formerly powerful companies with so much debt that today's younger executives face a challenge they did not face in the 1980s -- survival! . . .

The true test of today's leaders will not be who can throw around the most bucks, but who can truly lead, nurture and organize all generations of our leaders to follow a vision that we all have: To prepare our young people for a life full of opportunity -- academically through a sound public school system, culturally through exposure to the fine institutions of the arts and professionally through a responsible, active business community.

Editor: . . . Several of our customers and purveyors have offered their sympathy since what they refer to as the "unfair review" [of Cafe des Artistes appeared in the March 3 Dining Out]. Most of our customers feel our prices are quite reasonable and our wine list an astonishing bargain. . . .

At the Cafe we are well aware of the recession, as are other restaurants. This fall we took steps intended to attract customers who were looking for excellent food at affordable prices by drastically reducing our wine mark-up, instituting a prix-fixe dinner . . . , beefing up our light fare menu and lowering prices dramatically on our lunch and dinner menus. To have all these efforts sabotaged by a clever comparison of the deep green walls and the green needed to pay the check is frustrating. . . .

Editor: I am writing in response to the review of Chez Charles that ran in Dining Out. We regret Lynn Williams' bad dining

experience, as well as the mistakes that our kitchen staff made, but we feel that the overall tone of the review was unfair to the restaurant and less than helpful to the dining public. . . . The feeling here is that Ms. Williams was making quips at our expense; her writing style is good, but her exercise of journalistic license is questionable. . . .

. . . It saddens me that a single review, which was based on such shallow observations, could be so damaging to a restaurant that means so much to those of us who spend most of our time trying to provide the public with a quality dining experience. I can only hope that you will advise your reviewers to act with more responsibility and scrutiny in the future.

Editor: . . . In the years and years we've visited Rudys', we've been served consistently well and imaginatively. Probably because one of the principals, Rudy Speckamp (a renowned chef highly respected internationally), oversees their product day and day out.

I have no connection with Rudys' other than being one of their satisfied patrons. I believe your comments and your two-star rating are injurious to people who deserve better.
