Chicago Cubs -- Activated P Rick Sutcliffe from 15-day disabled list. Sent IF-C Erik Pappas to Class AAA Iowa.

Houston Astros -- SS Eric Yelding withdrew appeal of 1-game suspension and will miss tonight's game as penalty for throwing helmet at Cincinnati Reds' Rob Dibble in retaliation for pitch that went foot behind Yelding's back. The pitcher is appealing 3-game suspension.

Pittsburgh Pirates -- Recalled P Mark Huismann from Class AAA Buffalo. Sent C Tom Prince to Buffalo.

Basketball Philadelphia 76ers -- Placed F Kenny Payne on injured list. Signed F-G Robert Reid.

Washington Bullets -- Signed 6-foot-5 G Larry Robinson (6.7 ppg for Bullets, then 2.3 ppg for Golden State Warriors) and placed C-F Charles Jones (pulled left groin muscle) on injured list.

Broadcasting ABC -- Named Jack O'Hara executive producer of ABC Sports.

Colleges Gator Bowl -- Officials said this year's football game will be played 8 p.m. Dec. 29 and be televised by TBS.

Drexel -- Named William R. Herrion men's basketball coach; Johnson Bowie director of men's athletics; and Barbara Kilgour director of women's athletics.

Duke -- Sophomore G Bill McCaffrey (11.6 ppg; 16 points in NCAA championship-game win against Kansas) will leave basketball team at end of spring semester, partly because of concern over playing time. The (Durham, N.C.) Herald-Sun reported that Stanford has been suggested as a possible destination.

Kentucky Wesleyan -- Named Scott Lewis women's basketball coach.

Texas A&M -- Sophomore G Brooks Thompson, saying he is worried that NCAA will put school on probation, will transfer to Oklahoma State. Thompson will sit out next season and have 2 seasons of eligibility remaining.

Washington -- Signed Chris Gobrecht, women's basketball coach, to 2-year contract.

Football New Orleans Saints -- G Brad Edelman (Pro Bowl starter in 1987 and alternate in 1982-84 and 1988) retired after 9 seasons, primarily because of arthritic hip and ruptured disk.

Ottawa Rough Riders (CFL) -- Signed QB Dan Enos to 3-year contract.

Tennis Davis Cup -- The second-round match between the United States and Spain will be held on grass courts in Newport, R.I., June 14-16.
