Dixie Landera leads early, wins by 2 3/4 lengths at Pimlico

April 17, 1991|By James H. Jackson

Dixie Landera, taking the lead 10 yards out of the starting gate, led the rest of the way to post a 2 3/4 -length victory over Doubletime Miss in the featured Red Shoes Purse for fillies and mares yesterday at Pimlico Race Course.

Ridden by Michael Luzzi, 8-5 favorite Dixie Landera repulsed a challenge by Landing at Dawn on the backstretch and, under slight urging, pulled away from the rallying Doubletime Miss through the stretch to cover the 6 furlongs over a fast track in 1 minute, 11 3/5 seconds.

Trained by Hank Allen, the 4-year-old filly by Dixieland Band out of the Roberto mare Matroshka was making her 1991 debut.

The victory was the second of the day for Luzzi, who also won on Just Try It in the fourth race.

* The Right Style, a 3-year-old filly trained by William Wolfendale and ridden by Tim Peterson, fell in the backstretch during the third race.

Peterson got up and walked away but complained of neck pain. He was taken to Sinai Hospital, where X-rays were negative, and is expected to resume riding tomorrow.

The Right Style, which had an irreparable broken leg, according to Dr. J. Forrest Peacock, the track veterinarian, was humanely destroyed.
