BRISTOL, Tenn. -- Bobby Labonte followed a lapped ca around Dale Earnhardt to take the lead with 18 laps left and held on to win his first Busch Grand National race in record time yesterday in the Budweiser 250.

Labonte was second to Earnhardt when Davey Allison, working his way back into the lead lap, dipped below Earnhardt and passed him. Labonte took advantage of the pathway opened by Allison and cruised to victory in his Oldsmobile.

Labonte set a track record for a Grand National race at the high-banked .533-mile Bristol International Raceway with an average speed of 92.875 mph. The previous record was 85.776 by Rick Wilson in 1989.

David Green finished second in the $135,151 race, also in an Oldsmobile. Earnhardt finished third in a Chevrolet, Jimmy Spencer took fourth in his Pontiac and Ed Berrier finished fifth in an Oldsmobile.
